Meta is giving the in-app Facebook video tab a fresh look in what looks to be an Instagram-style makeover. The social media platform is renaming Facebook Watch to simply ‘Video’, and alongside this rebranding, Meta is introducing several updates and features that aim to enhance the experience for its users.
Facebook Watch was introduced as a dedicated video platform back in 2018. Over the years, Facebook has undergone various transformations and shutdowns of certain features and divisions.
One notable addition to the reworked platform is the incorporation of Reels’ popular editing tools. Reels, which gained popularity on Instagram, will now be integrated into the tab. This means users can access a wide range of creative editing options, including speed adjustments, clip replacement, and support for HDR videos.
Recognizing the importanceof audio in videos, Facebook is also improving its audio features. Users will have an easier time finding the perfect soundtrack for their content and the ability to reduce noise and even record voiceovers.
Facebook is also introducing a new ‘Explore’ section reminiscent of the one on Instagram. This dedicated area will showcase trending clips and provide personalized recommendations, allowing users to discover new content.
Further strengthening the integration between Instagram and Reels is the option to cross-post Reels content on both platforms, allowing users to gain broader reach and exposure. Additionally, comments on Reels will be unified across Facebook and Instagram, facilitating seamless interaction between the two apps.
The updated video strategy by Meta reflects a shift towards focusing on Reels and algorithmically-recommended clips. With the rise of platforms like TikTok, it looks like Meta aims to compete in the short-form content space via Instagram and Facebook.
