Reddit Irks Users Again With ‘Ugly’ Default App Icon You Have To Pay To Replace

There must be something in the water over at the Reddit headquarters because the company has managed to continuously annoy users without trying. For one, the social network’s user engagement has suffered greatly after introducing API changes and fees that make it impossible for popular third-party apps to continue supporting its feeds. And now that those channels are gone, users have dropped off too.
With pretty much the native app left in the wake, Reddit has roped in another feature to reach into the pockets of iOS users: premium app icons.
Yes, you have to pay for app icons now—and no, if you’re still partial to the original logo, it doesn’t mean you’re spared.
That’s because the new default on iOS is a pixelated eight-bit design called OrangeRed, and it’s not winning any pageants. “Ugly” appears to be a common criticism for the artwork among users and media outlets alike.

To replace the icon, even with the old Reddit logo, members will need to upgrade to the Reddit Premium tier, which is priced at US$5.99 a month, or US$49.99 per year. Those subscribed via the iOS app will have to chip in a tad bit more, paying US$6.99 per month or US$59.99 per year.

In a feeble attempt to reel new premium users in, the platform is currently offering two alternative icons “for a limited time.”
As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it—so you can’t blame users for going a little loco over a logo.
