Swatch Wonders ‘What If’ Its Watches Were Square—So It Made Some As It Turns 40
Swatch seems struck by a moment of (mid-life?) existential dilemma in its latest collection, as it questions ‘What If’ its creators went with its initial square prototype instead of a circular one.
Swatch watches are known for their signature circular faces and quirky designs that have essentially marked their spot in pop culture. Now, it’s backtracking all the way to its beginning and stepping into an alternative dimension where it wonders what would have happened if it had gone down a different route.
In celebration of Swatch’s 40th anniversary, the Bioceramic ‘What If?’ watches come in a squared-up version of the company’s Bioceramic 33 mm x 33 mm case, crown, and buckle meant to add durability to your timepiece. Beyond the case, they also feature a new “bio-sourced” strap for a few extra sustainability brownie points. The faces are encased in edge-to-edge glass to accentuate their unique square shape.
The timepieces also pay homage to the brand’s heritage with retro battery covers that feature a dial from one of the first GENT prototypes in 1983.
Over the years, fans have become familiar with Swatch’s rounded watch designs. However, the introduction of the square versions seamlessly integrates into the collection and does not seem out of place. It begs the question, what if they had incorporated this design earlier and made it a staple?
There is no word if Swatch intends to do so; for now, it is a special birthday celebratory release which you can purchase online for US$110 per piece.
