KFC Canada Says R.I.P. To Its Bland, Tasteless Fries With… An Actual ‘Funeral’

KFC Canada is bidding farewell to its old fries—a sore spot of criticism over the years—to introduce its new and boldly seasoned fries in an effort to win back the hearts of loyal fans. To do this, the fast-food chain held a ‘Fry Funeral’ for its old fries, allowing customers to bid a final “fry-well” to the bland, tasteless side.

The quick service restaurant came up with a unique, tongue-in-cheek funeral-themed approach, with shots from a funeral procession and an online funeral ceremony representing Canada’s disdain for its old fries.

Fans were given the opportunity to pay their final (dis)respects to the old fries as a hearse paraded through the streets of Toronto, making stops at notable locations like Yonge-Dundas Square and the Budweiser stage. For those who couldn’t participate in person, a live-streamed funeral will be held on August 1, 2023, as a fitting tribute to the side.

Going forward, the newly-introduced New Seasoned Fries promise to be crispy and packed with flavor, aimed at satisfying even the toughest critics. To give Canadians a chance to try the new offering, KFC is offering a limited-time promotion where customers can get the dish for just $1. The deal is available in KFC restaurants, on their website (KFC.ca), and through the KFC App.

KFC’s decision to overhaul their fries comes in response to feedback from customers, who have been vocal about their disappointment with the old fries. The campaign takes a playful and creative approach, leveraging real tweets and commentary from Canadians to create mass awareness for the new fries and mark the end of the “Soggy Fry Era.”

The creative campaign, developed in partnership with Courage, can be seen and heard across various platforms, including out-of-home advertisements, television, online video, and social media—hoping to spark buzz among customers, signaling a new era for the signature side dish.
