Las Vegas Mass Shooting Memorial Could Beam Individual Lights For Each Victim
Six years after the Las Vegas Strip massacre, Clark County, Nevada, has unveiled a recommended design for a permanent memorial that will be constructed at the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.
Each of the 58 victims who lost their lives in the tragedy when a gunman opened fire from the Mandalay Bay Hotel would be represented by an individual beam, situated within a garden carved in the shape of an infinity symbol.
Visitors could wander through a winding path past a 58-foot glass tower and “remembrance ring” bearing the same number of candle-like beams—where each beam would display the name and image of a victim. This design from local firm JCJ Architecture was chosen from a total of five proposals.
In addition, 22,000 additional lights would be placed within the park to mark the number of concertgoers on the fateful night. Apart from the recommended design, the committee is expected to present an alternate option by OLIN + Andy Scott in September.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the second design would see 15 large horse statues placed to represent the home states and countries of the victims, while two smaller horses will be featured in honor of the children whose parents were killed in the shooting.
“We are grateful to everyone who has participated with us in this process,” commented committee chairman Tennille Pereira.
“We have deep appreciation for all those involved in expressing their thoughts and ideas about what our memorial should be and to the professional teams that honored our community through the amazing creativity displayed in each of the design concepts presented to us.”
