British luxury sports car manufacturer McLaren has unveiled an exclusive new paint finish for its latest supercar, the 750S, which isn’t like any other regular paint job seen on the roads.
Developed and applied by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), the Spectrum Theme promises to set a new standard in automotive paint specialism, offering customers a unique way to personalize their vehicles.
The SpectrumTheme is not just a simple paint job, requiring the ingenuity of MSO’s world-class paint technicians to perfect the multi-tone effect.
The result? A mesmerizing display of seven different shades that create a tonal shift. In addition, the close bunching of the hues produces a visual illusion of light to dark within each individual stripe, giving an impression of speed and acceleration, even when the 750S is stationary.
Customers can choose from three distinctive variants of the Spectrum Theme: Spectrum Blue, Spectrum Gray, and Spectrum Orange. Plus, McLaren supercars can be further customized with more bespoke options, such as vibrantly colored leather trim, a unique dedication plaque, and extended visual carbon fiber door sills featuring hand-painted Spectrum graded effect MSO logos.
If blue, gray, or orange don’t sound appealing, there’s more. McLaren has made it possible for customers to create their own unique colorways, designed and delivered by MSO. To achieve the desired outcome, each paint job demands a bespoke blend of new paints that artfully combine just the right amount of light and dark tones.
During the process, implementing the Spectrum lines on the dihedral doors and having to adhere to the shut lines and intricate aerodynamic sculpting of the car was a particular challenge even for the skilled technicians.
To add an extra touch of dynamism, the special theme incorporates a visual tribute to the popular Velocity Theme, also offered by MSO. Upon closer look, the seventh paint shade is not a solid stripe but a gentle Velocity fade that wraps around the rear of the 750S.
“The Spectrum Theme takes what we can do at McLaren to the next level. A huge degree of attention and accuracy is required to ensure the lines of the Spectrum are completely sympathetic to the surface of the 750S’s incredible bodywork, and the new techniques we’ve developed to achieve this are a perfect match for the 750’s wide-ranging technical advances, said Michael McDonagh, director at McLaren Special Operations
“The increasing complexity of what we can offer to customers, through themes like Spectrum, is testament to the incredible experience and expertise of our paint technicians at MSO.”
