Mattel Takes ‘Weird Barbie’ Doll To Retail, Giving Her The Love She Deserves

The world of Barbie is continuously expanding to become more inclusive—but even in Barbie Land, one stands out as a reject.

Although she’s pretty comfortable with who she is, Weird Barbie from the wildly successful Greta Gerwig film is finally getting the acknowledgement she deserves from Mattel. The wise outcast, played by Kate McKinnon, who “is always in the splits,” is getting a doll in her likeness in the real world.

And she’s special, alright. You won’t find Weird Barbie on shelves. Rather, she’ll be made to order.

The plastic character dons the same puffy pink dress seen on McKinnon in the movie, complete with colorful scribbles, and her bright snakeskin boots. She also has marker ink on her face and a shaggy hairdo, signs of a doll who’s been loved and played with a little too much.

This Barbie is “made to move,” according to the Mattel Creations website. Unlike Stereotypical Barbie, her limbs have the ability to hyper-extend, even more so than the wooden artist’s dummies at IKEA. She can do the splits. She is always in the splits.
