In order to comply with regulation changes in the European Union by August 28, 2023, it appears TikTok is changing how its application operates in a big way.
The most significant of these will be users’ ability to opt into a personalized For You Page (FYP), which allows algorithms to recommend videos based on one’s viewing preferences.
Only those in the region will be allowed to disable personalization—which will mean an FYP filled with videos popular in their location instead of specially-tailored content other users around the world enjoy.
However, EU accounts will still be able to access their dedicated ‘Following’ and ‘Friends’ feeds, though posts will now show up in chronological order instead of based on their account activity.
These changes come under requirements by the Digital Services Act (DSA) that dictates “providers of very large online platforms,” such as TikTok, need to provide “alternative options which are not based on profiling.”
Additionally, the EU will receive a new reporting option that will allow users to flag videos that shouldn’t be on the site. If the clip is deemed not to have violated general guidelines, a new dedicated moderating team will look into the report to determine if it has transgressed regional laws.
Of course, with a platform such as TikTok, which has based much of its appeal on its algorithms, it will be a huge departure from how it typically operates.
Will it still hold the same appeal to users without personalization? Only time will tell.
