To honor 90 years of Skippy gracing breakfast tables across the globe, directing duo Les Garçons recently released a 30-second spot—titled Spreading Fun for 90 Years—that takes viewers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
The commercial, which was created by the production team at L’Éloi for creative agency BBDO, shines a spotlight on how the iconic peanut butter brand has remained a staple throughout the decades, even as the world and scenarios around mealtime change.
Featuring period sets, props, and wardrobe, the film condenses nine different decades into four chapters, beginning with a kitchen inspired by the 30s and 40s before moving onto a living room reminiscent of the groovy 60s and 70s.
Each scene is filled with colors, textures, and motifs that point to the era it’s meant to represent. Remember the lava lamp, which first made an appearance in the 60s and had a resurgence in the 90s?
“The camera moves precisely and smoothly, like a needle through a tapestry, weaving all of the crazy color and texture together,” quipped the directors, who revealed the creative endeavor had been given the nickname “Peanut Butter Everywhere, All at Once.”
“This is the thrill of directing for us, getting into a creative flow where it feels like we’re all just playing, with really amazing toys. Every corner of the frame reveals a wink or nod to the period we’re in. The studio was packed to the rafters with props, it was like walking through a museum.”
