BMW Builds Armored ‘Protection’ Sedans That Can Withstand Explosions

BMW recently unveiled a new generation of luxury sedan protection vehicles—developed based on the iconic BMW 7 Series. These sturdy cars merge cutting-edge security features with ride comfort and spaciousness for the best of both worlds.

The latest launch comprises the BMW i7 Protection and the BMW 7 Series Protection, with the former marking a milestone as the world’s first all-electric protection sedan.

As its name implies, the cars’ main focus is on the integrated security concept, dubbed the BMW Protection Core. This innovation features a model-specific, self-supporting body structure constructed from armored steel.

To make sure the vehicle is completely impervious to attacks from all angles, there’s additional armor for the underbody, roof, and the addition of reinforced glass.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, these cars are built at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing using an elaborate “craft manufacturing” process.

Impressively, the vehicles offer customized protection from firearms or explosives. Classified as offering class VR9 protection, they adhere to the internationally recognized official test criteria set by Germany’s Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM).

For example, fire from caliber 7.62x54 R ammunition, a threat from the highest civilian resistance class VPAM 10, will be countered by the glass in these models.

That’s not all. Occupants can rest assured that they’re secure from explosive threats, such as drone attacks and hand grenade detonation, due to the special armor used in the roof and underbody. Even the fuel tank boasts a self-sealing mechanism to prevent fuel loss in case of impact.

For customers seeking the ultimate level of safety, the automaker is offering special protection driver training courses for chauffeurs to brush up on theoretical knowledge, practical vehicle control exercises, and tactical response training.

Both sedans are set to make their debut appearance at the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, with deliveries to customers commencing in December 2023.
