Can’t think of a valid excuse to get out of that birthday dinner you got next week? Maybe La-Z-Boy can help.
Yes, the company that brought about the reclining chair is also coming up with ways to get you out of social functions so that you can presumably spend more time in your La-Z-Boy.
Aptly named ‘The Decliner’, this artificially intelligent prototype chair is going against FOMO (the fear of missing out) and, instead, turning the opportunity of missing out on things into a joyous occasion. All you would need to do to get out of an event is to pull on its handle and kick back as an text message containing your now super valid excuse will come through.
If you’re keen, you can send in your most creative excuse to the company’s site or on social media and win one of the three prototypes.
The Decliner is part of a larger new marketing move for the company called Long Live The Lazy, which is seeking to take back the term Lazy. After years of the pandemic and a socioeconomic downturn that people are now facing, the company is trying to encourage people to take time off for themselves and skip that brunch or drinks in favor of some much-needed time alone.
The message is driven by a campaign spot meant to look like a faux political advertisement that champions the slogan “We the Lazy,” where a group of customers is seen backing up the sentiment that sometimes being social is not as rewarding as being lazy.
