White House Launches $20M ‘Cyber Challenge’ To Beef Up Security With AI

Looking to bolster the security of the vital software used to run the country every day, the White House has introduced the ‘AI Cyber Challenge’ (AIxCC)—a major competition that will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to safeguard crucial systems, including those powering the internet and critical infrastructure.

Spearheaded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the initiative aims to identify and rectify software vulnerabilities by harnessing the power of AI.

According to the Biden-Harris Administration, the competition will span over two years, tasking participants across the nation with leveraging up-and-coming tools to detect and rectify vulnerabilities.

With collaboration from technology giants such as Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, DARPA hopes to address one of the most pressing challenges in cybersecurity: enhancing the security of computer code.

As part of the contest, an open challenge will be hosted where participants can vie to secure crucial software systems in exchange for “millions of dollars in prizes.”

Participants can leverage the capabilities of prominent AI systems from participating companies, with US$7 million specially allocated to support small businesses interested in joining the competition.

The qualifying event is set to take place in spring 2024, after which the top-performing teams will proceed to the semifinals during DEF CON 2024, a globally recognized cybersecurity conference.

Following this, the finalists selected from this semifinal round will then compete in the final phase at DEF CON 2025.

Throughout the challenge, the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), an initiative of the Linux Foundation, will play a vital role as a challenge advisor.

It will ensure that contestants incorporate the practical application of the winning software to safeguard essential software systems and the well-being of individuals.

Overall, the competition will award nearly US$20 million in prizes, no doubt showing how seriously officials are taking cyber threats and looking to improve the country’s abilities to withstand such attacks.
