The allure of automation is that it can perform all the menial legwork so humans can focus on other activities.
And people have been refunneling their energies into other activities, alright. Last week, California officials green-lighted 24/7 taxi services by self-driving car services Waymo and Cruise, giving the public more ways to get home throughout all hours of the day. Alas, humans, being humans, have a way of turning anything that takes off into an avenue to get off.
The San Francisco Standard has interviewed passengers who have admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse, drinking, and smoking inside the new fleets of driverless robotaxis.
One woman in her 20s said she had done the deed with her partner on her first ride in one of these vehicles. Her companion, in his 30s, on the other hand, said he’d had several other joy rides via this means of transportation.
The pair “got straight to it” when they entered the unmanned cab, recounted the woman, who said she was only wearing a kimono during the trip.
The man reasoned that there’s no one around to caution riders, “You can’t do that.” He shared that intimate parties would be more emboldened to up the antes inside driverless cars after they got more experienced.
The Standard says it has spoken to four separate Cruise passengers who were canoodling with their partners’ gears, and it has seen their receipts to confirm their ride history. However, the publication hasn’t found anyone who’s gotten down and dirty in a Waymo robotaxi… yet.
In response, a Waymo spokesperson tells the news outlet: “The vast majority of our riders are respectful and follow our rider rules.”
Though, who’s to confirm what happens behind closed doors, except for the ones behind them and the innocent bystanders who are just watching to cross the road?
