USPS Magnifies Some Of Life’s Smallest Objects Onto Striking Stamps

The US Postal Service (USPS) has taken a giant leap into the unseen world with a collection of 20 Forever Stamps, each casting the lens on one of life’s tiniest components. The artwork encourages a better appreciation of the beauty that exists in the finest corners of existence.

This new issuance, entitled Life Magnified (via Colossal), invites observers to peer into the realm of life imperceptible by the human eye through images captured using advanced photographic techniques and microscopes. These stamps—created in partnership with the American Philatelic Society at the Great American Stamp Show in Cleveland—bring intricate details of the world to our view, showcasing everything from cells and tissues to tiny organisms that play vital roles in Earth’s ecosystems.

Throughout history, the pursuit of knowledge has driven scientists to explore the hidden intricacies of our environment. Over the centuries, the development of powerful microscopes has allowed us to uncover the secrets of the micro world, revealing the stunning complexity of even the smallest elements of life.

In this series, neon images bring to life the beauty found within a knotted human hair, the feather of a macaw parrot, the delicate structure of moss leaves, the symmetrical perfection of diatom shells, the enchanting patterns of flame lily pollen, and so on.

“Usually, we shrink images to fit on a postage stamp. In this case, we have enlarged the images to postage-stamp size—that doesn’t happen often,” notes Luke Grossmann, senior vice president of finance and strategy for the Postal Service.

“There’s a famous adage: ‘The more you know, the more you realize you don't know.’ As these stamps show, there are worlds to be explored, even at the microscopic level.”

The stamps were brought to life by USPS art director Derry Noyes, who gathered diverse, existing microscopic photographs to literally magnify perspectives.

A sheet of 20 can now be purchased for US$13.20. As Forever Stamps, their nomination remains just as valuable in the future as it is today.
