If graphic design isn’t your passion, and you’re better at providing direction than working with the vector pen tool, there’s now another way to bring visuals to life without the gruntwork. OpenAI has now integrated Canva into the popular ChatGPT, enabling individuals, businesses—and perhaps even creatives who wish to speed up their workflows—to generate visuals quickly and effortlessly.
While both chatbots and image creation tools already seek to streamline the work process, they typically function separately to yield a single outcome. The new extension, on the other hand, unites their features in one place. You can now churn out a banner right within ChatGPT, and personalize it with few clicks.
Through the Canva plugin for ChatGPT, users can instruct the bot to come up with templates for logos, posters, social media posts, presentations, videos, websites, and documents, as noted by artificial intelligence educator Paul Couvert. Rather than conjuring up graphics from scratch, though, the tool offers suggestions for ready-made Canva templates based on your needs and prompts.
The Canva add-on, as with ChatGPT’s other plugins, is currently only available to subscribers of the US$20 monthly ChatGPT Plus tier. This is partly because it works in tandem with OpenAI’s more advanced GPT-4 model, which recognizes images as input.
If you’re a Plus user, you can install the Canva plugin by selecting the GPT-4 toggle at the top of the chat screen, and then visiting the Plugin Store and looking up “Canva.”
You can then get the bot to generate relevant visuals using simple text prompts like, “I am a brand manager for a fashion company. Create an Instagram story.” This prompts the model to propose a handful of templates. Clicking on their links allows you to edit them via the Canva platform.
Would you use this text-to-image tool on steroids to inspire your future designs?
