TikTok is introducing a tool aimed at enhancing transparency in AI-generated content. The goal is to prevent any potential confusion and misrepresentation.
The social network already mandates the labeling of AI content with visuals and audio that could easily trick viewers into thinking they are real. The new tool simplifies this process, helping creators comply with the policy.
A message will appear on labeled videos underneath the creator’s username, highlighting AI involvement. Importantly, TikTok won’t penalize creators for not marking AI content outside the existing policy.
The platform is alsodeveloping automatic detection and labeling for AI content. It will test an ‘AI-generated’ label and explore partnerships to improve detection.
Additionally, itwill also include “AI” in the names of effects that use artificial intelligence. This makes it easier for users to discern what is real and what is not.
TikTok collaborated with experts, including MIT’s Dr David G. Rand, to create the AI labeling system. The term “AI-generated” was chosen for its universal understanding.
TikTok also plans to release educational resources to help users better understand AI. These updates align with the platform’s commitment to responsible synthetic media practices and AI transparency.
The rollout of AI labels has begun, but it may take some time to reach all users.
