LEGO recently pulled the curtains back on its latest campaign, titled Play Is Your Superpower.
This creative endeavor marks a pivotal moment for the beloved toy manufacturer, featuring their very first “fully playable” brand film, according to the toymaker. The advertisement hopes to reignite the spirit of play, not just among children but adults as well.
In total,Play Is Your Superpower will stretch across four months, anchored by three key moments: its fall launch, World Play Day on October 12th, and the bustling holiday season.
Of course, the centerpiece of the launch is a groundbreaking film that is entirely playable. Packed with hidden surprises and easter eggs, the interactive video invites viewers to participate online or via the brand’s application actively.
Prompts throughout the spot encourage families to join a global squad of fervent play advocates by transforming themselves into LEGO minifigures.
Complementing the hero film is a series of lighthearted outtakes and bloopers designed to bring moments of joy to families in a humorous way.
Notable names like Tan France, Naomi Watanabe, Bindi Irwin, and Stephanie Beatriz share their unique stories of how childhood play shaped their lives and achievements.
In addition, those watching the film will spot Hollywood actress Jane Lynch taking on the role of a CEO consumed by work, who experiences a transformative journey into the world of play.
Interestingly, the entire concept is a response to a recent global study that reveals a concerning trend: children now spend a mere 2% of their week playing, equivalent to just seven hours.
In contrast, the average adult devotes a staggering 26 hours per week to smartphone scrolling. This growing play deficit highlights the urgent need to revive the vital role of play in shaping a child’s cognitive abilities and overall well-being.
“For over 90 years, we have been a champion of children and their right to play. We believe play helps children develop skills like creativity, confidence and communication that helps them learn and thrive today and in the future,” said Julia Goldin, chief product and marketing officer at the LEGO Group.
“The film showcases the endless possibilities for play that children see, in even the dullest of situations, and shows the difference play can make to the world as the children rebuild it for the better,” concurred Nic Taylor, head of Our LEGO Agency.
