Reddit Is Rewarding Contributors With Real Cash Converted From ‘Karma’

Reddit has just unveiled a contributor program designed to empower eligible users in the United States to transform their Reddit gold and karma into real-world currency.

Eligibility for the program extends to users over the age of 18, provided they can verify their identity through their Persona and Stripe. Additionally, participants must have accounts that are at least 30 days old. A fundamental criterion is that only safe-for-work posts can be considered for monetization, ensuring content aligns with community standards.

The monetary rewards users can reap are intrinsically tied to their Reddit karma, representing the upvotes garnered by their posts. To be eligible for withdrawals, users must accumulate a minimum of 10 gold within a 30-day timeframe--which essentially means that all your hot takes on current affairs could soon be bringing home the bacon.

Well, it might not be enough to completely change your job title to “Full-Time Redditor,” but for users possessing karma ranging from 100 to 4,999, each gold can potentially translate to US$0.90 in real currency. However, once the coveted 5,000-karma threshold is surpassed, the conversion rate elevates to US$1 per gold.

Interestingly, this contributor program surfaced as a leak approximately two months ago, discovered during an APK teardown by a reverse engineer. Such initiatives have sparked discussions regarding potential spammy posting and engagement bait, echoing concerns raised when Twitter, now known as X, introduced a similar creator monetization program.

In parallel with this development, Reddit has revamped its gold system, streamlining the process of acquiring gold. Prices for gold commence at US$1.99 for a single gold unit and scale up to US$49.00 for a bundle of 25 gold units.

These enhancements to Reddit’s payment mechanisms arrive at a time when the platform is grappling with backlash over contentious API changes, which have led to the discontinuation of popular third-party applications, including Apollo, Reddit is Fun, ReddPlanet, and Sync, signaling a period of transformation and adjustment for the Reddit community.
