It’s no secret that getting kids to eat healthily can be a struggle, and in Japan, this challenge manifested in a surprising way—unfinished bottles of milk. In many parts of the country, a concerning 65% of elementary school children weren’t receiving the recommended nutritional balance because they simply weren’t finishing their daily bottle of milk. But what if the solution to this problem came in the form of comics?

In a stroke of creative genius, a simple yet effective idea was born. Instead of a plain, uninteresting milk bottle, a four-frame manga design was painted on it in white by Seki Milk, a supplier of milk and dairy items to local schools (per Spoon & Tamago). As kids consumed the milk, they were treated to a visual story, illustrated by comic book artist amiakihiko, unfolding before their eyes.

With 10 unique manga stories printed on the bottles, children had a fresh narrative to enjoy with each bottle of milk. The results were astonishing. In Gifu Prefecture, 95% of the children not only finished their milk but also received the full nutritional benefits.

The results of the innovative Milk Manga, dreamed up by advertising agency VOJ, were nothing short of astounding. In Gifu Prefecture, where this experiment took place, a remarkable 95% of the children not only finished their milk but also savored 100% of its essential nutrients.

It’s a heartwarming example of how creativity can be milked to address even the most perplexing challenges, like ensuring kids get the nutrition they need.
