Porsche Co-Creates Electric Sports Boat Equipped With Its EV’s Battery
Porsche and Frauscher Shipyard, in a new collaboration, have brought forth the 850 Fantom Air, an electric sports boat that channels the drive technology of Porsche’s forthcoming electric SUV, the Macan EV.
The first prototype of the 850 Fantom Air tested the waters, quite literally, in September 2022 on Austria’s Lake Traunsee. It made its debut presentation to Porsche’s board members the following month.
This vessel is anchored in Frauscher’s 858 Fantom Air model and boasts room for nine individuals.
The helm and console of the boat, courtesy of the FA Porsche studio, showcase a carefully designed sports steering wheel, analog instruments, and front seats inspired by the sports cars synonymous with Porsche’s heritage.
As for its design, you’ll find a 12-inch touch-enabled display, a high-end audio system, a frameless windshield, and radiant LED lighting that collectively set the stage for a sleek and high-tech experience.
Propelled by a 400 kW permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, the 850 Fantom Air commands speeds of up to 45.8 knots, or 52.8 mph. It’s equipped with four performance modes, each delivering distinct throttle responses and maximum velocities.
Powering this aquatic marvel is a 100 kWh Li-ion battery pack, which is the same one seen in the incoming 2024 Macan. It offers a range of around 28 miles at a cruising speed of 22 knots. In the fast lane of technology, it supports 800-volt tech for swift charging—reaching 80% capacity in less than 30 minutes with a 250 kW DC charger. Plus, there’s an 11 kW charger for high-voltage AC connections.
Ready to make waves, the first edition of the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air is available for order now, starting at €561,700 (US$595,000). These watercraft will be crafted at Frauscher’s facility in Ohlsdorf, Austria.
For those eager to get an up-close look, the e-boat’s official public debut is set for the Düsseldorf boot in January 2024. Afterward, delivery to the initial customers will unfold in the ensuing months.
