Apple Could Soon Start Updating iPhones In-Store While They’re Still In Boxes

The excitement of unboxing a brand-new iPhone is often accompanied by an all-too-familiar interruption: the immediate need for software updates. With the swift evolution of technology, these updates have become crucial for performance, security, and new features. But this ritual of unwrapping a phone only to be greeted by the ‘Update Now’ prompt can be a dampener. 

Apple, ever the innovator, is devising a creative solution to address this common inconvenience. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant has developed a system that allows iOS updates to be seamlessly applied to unopened iPhones while they are still within the walls of an Apple Store.

In the future, employees will place the sealed boxes onto a “proprietary pad-like device,” which will turn the iPhone on, update it, and switch it back off again, all without it ever leaving its packaging. That way, once it reaches the hands of the customer, they will be able to use it immediately.

Although the initial report pertains specifically to iPhones, there’s potential for this system to extend to other products within Apple’s lineup.

The report suggests that Apple aims to implement this practical solution in its stores by the close of 2023, promising a more seamless and user-friendly experience for its customers.
