A new change is coming to X (previously Twitter) in how creators can monetize their posts. Owner Elon Musk has disclosed that content corrected by the Community Notes feature will no longer qualify for revenue sharing.
Put into simple terms: any lies or misinformation on the app will not be up for monetization.
Community Notes, serving as a crowd-sourced fact-checking system on X, allows users to contribute brief contextual notes, suggest corrections, and assess the helpfulness of other notes. The most widely agreed-upon annotations will be prominently featured. Now, any post that the wider community has corrected will be “ineligible for revenue share,” says Musk.
Musk also adds that any attempts to “weaponize” Community Notes to target different creators will be seen, as code and data are open source.
Worth “noting” that any attempts to weaponize @CommunityNotes to demonetize people will be immediately obvious, because all code and data is open source
This policy change aligns with X’s broader strategy to address misinformation, with a specific focus on content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Recent enhancements to Community Notes include expediting the process of fact-check ratings and implementing notifications to promote the revision or removal of erroneous posts.
The objective of this measure is to discourage creators who may have financial incentives to propagate sensationalist content in the context of the reaction-driven online landscape.
However, this also poses another question as to whether all posts that have been amended will be ineligible for revenue. Many times, the content will be edited by Community Notes members not because the information is wrong but because further context might help audiences understand what is being said. It remains unclear if these type of corrections are classified under misinformation as well.
