Months ago, Rimowa teamed up with Tiffany & Co to create “rock-cut” luggage, decked out with an exquisite aluminum finish that mirrors the sparkle of a diamond. Each trunk came with its handles, wheels, and embossed tag adorned in the signature baby blue hue.
Now, the luxury brand has unveiled its first-ever leather cabin suitcase. While the material may not be the obvious choice when it comes to durability, the Maison’s launch boasts an innovative wrapping technique that ensures the carry-on retains its shape and iconic grooves.
Available in black and navy blue as part of the label’s Distinct collection, the case features an interior furnished by Rimowa’s jacquard monogram, with additional rear protective bumpers to protect the trunk while it travels from one airport to another.
Of course, premium finishings command higher prices, with the leather model retailing at US$3,300—over twice the cost of the marque’s typical offerings—making it one of its most expensive offerings.
Emelie De Vitis, senior vice president of product and marketing at Rimowa, told Fast Company the design took three years to perfect, with the aim of creating a “luxurious high-end version” of the brand’s popular suitcase.
As such, in order to find a material that would remain scratch-resistant despite frequent travel, designers at the label’s factory in Cologne turned to skins used in the likes of vehicles and aircraft. As with most forms of leather, over time, the color and sheen of the luggage’s fabric will patina.
Each Rimowa Distinct Cabin suitcase comes with a stage-free telescopic handle, leather grabbing handles, a multiwheel system, a flex divider, a zipped compartment, and a flat-bottomed packing area. Head here for more information.
