Nikon ‘Time-Travels’ In Alluring, Current Photos That Seem Frozen In The Past

Photography serves as a silent vessel through time, allowing us to traverse years, emotions, and moments with the quiet click of a shutter. Nikon flips the switch a little. In a novel blend of past and present, the brand has presented a striking image series that challenges perceptions of time.

For this captivating project, six photographers set out with Nikon’s latest Z f camera to produce a collection of illusionary images that blur the lines between now and then.

Fusing vintage aesthetics and state-of-the-art features, the Z f model is well-suited for black and white photography. Its monochrome mode, enhanced by new Flat and Deep Tone Monochrome Picture Controls, invites photographers to explore a world without color distractions, while its precise stabilization and extended video capabilities promise a seamless creative experience.

The resulting shots provoke the beholder to question: were these taken now or then?

Street photographer Maximilian Streich hit the vibrant streets of Berlin, encapsulating the perpetual dance of the city’s urban life.

Urban architectural photographer Ben Moore, on the other hand, celebrated London’s buildings in shades of gray, connecting the city’s storied past with the pulse of the present.

Moore expresses excitement at having created photos that will outlive him, calling the endeavor “a dream.”

“I am lucky in the sense that as a London-based photographer, the city is rich with buildings and architecture that holds onto their heritage, so is the perfect place to explore the notion of timelessness… The camera made photography feel fun and exciting, while wrapping me in nostalgia. And when you have gear that makes your work feel fun, you’re going to want to use it continuously and have it last through the ages—just like the photographs.”

Portraiture takes a personal turn with Johanna Herrstedt and Helin Bereket, who have both delved into self-reflection.

Herrstedt captures tranquil scenes in nature, evoking a timeless tranquility.

As for Bereket, she merges herself with the city, crafting images that defy temporal classification.

“For this project, I interpreted the concept of ‘timelessness’ as an amalgamation of different time periods all merged together. To bring this to life, I used elements such as my surroundings, the architecture, my outfit and even the way I posed to represent the specific era I wanted to focus on,” Herrstedt relates.

“This unique mixture of elements, in my opinion, adds a sense of mystery and leaves the audience questioning when the photographs were taken, as there are a number of influences to sway their decision,” Herrstedt elaborates.

Finally, Parisian artist couple Maud Chalard and Theo Gosselin each bring their unique narrative styles to the project.

Chalard’s travel-inspired shots capture moments that seem to escape the ticking clock, and Gosselin’s images are steeped in a nostalgic ‘Americana’, creating a longing for a bygone era.

In the frozen dance of light and shadows, each image is a portal to the past, a tangible slice of time that invites us to step in and relive the whispers of yesteryears—while remaining where we are.
