Clothes Hangers Get A Clever Redesign That Makes Them More Organized & Compact

Clothes hangers, those unassuming yet indispensable tools of our daily lives, demonstrate how thoughtful design accommodates practical necessity in our everyday routines. Their horizontal bar, with two upward-curving ends, supports the garment’s shoulders. Meanwhile, the central bar provides a space-saving means to hang trousers, skirts, or scarves.

All in all, these essentials are naturally space-efficient—but with how tiny living spaces are getting, there’s certainly room for improvement. Swedish designer and YouTuber Simone Giertz has created ‘Coat Hingers’ to tackle the common challenge of limited closet space. These hangers fold in half, allowing your clothes to squeeze closer to the wall.

Giertz, known for her quirky yet functional inventions, is the creative mind behind the Every Day Calendar and the founder of the Yetch Store, which retails items like a screwdriver ring to twist screws into furniture. The designer dreams of one day opening an innovation house so she can “forever frolic in the world of solving everyday problems.”

The idea for Coat Hingers sprouted in the fall of 2020 when Giertz was moving into a new house in Los Angeles and found that there was no space for a clothing rack. This sparked a frustration about how coat hangers couldn’t move closer to the wall.

The designer then envisioned a version that could fold down the middle, allowing her to shift her clothes far back into the wall and leave more space for a chair and everything else.

After going through 124 versions, Giertz and her team perfected the Coat Hingers, which are crafted from stainless steel and feature an injection-molded acetal hinge, ensuring durability and rust resistance. The designer believes that the high-quality materials that go into the Coat Hingers will ensure their durability for a lifetime.

The redesigned essentials can function as standard hangers, measuring 17.7 inches in width, but can also be folded to a compact size of 9.3 inches. This feature makes them ideal for small or shallow closets where full-size hangers would be impractical. Giertz recommends pairing them with her specially designed bamboo rods, which are not only sustainable but also have grooves to keep the hangers neatly aligned.

This inventive product was launched as a Kickstarter project with an initial goal of US$50,000. Surpassing expectations, the project has already amassed over US$294,000 in pledges. Giertz is targeting to fulfill these orders by May 2024, offering a practical and creative solution for those struggling with limited closet space.
