NASA Reveals Splendid ‘Christmas Tree’ Lighting Up The Milky Way

Just in time for the festive season, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has gifted the world a celestial spectacle: an image of NGC 2264, which the space agency fondly dubs the “Christmas Tree Cluster.” This cosmic marvel, situated about 2,500 light-years from Earth in our Milky Way Galaxy, captures the imagination with its astral resemblance to a twinkling Christmas tree adorned with stellar lights.

Managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the Chandra program once again dazzles, this time with a de facto holiday card. The visual, a composite creation, showcases the vibrant young stars of the cluster, ranging in mass from a tenth to seven times that of our Sun. These stars, aged between one and five million years, create a vivid tableau against the dark canvas of space.

By rotating the image about 150 degrees from the standard astronomical north-up orientation, the enchanting Christmas tree shape comes alive, with its peak pointing upwards. No need for toppers as this magnificent display is all star(s).

The green hues, pointing to optical data from the National Science Foundation’s WIYN 0.9-meter telescope on Kitt Peak, depict the gas of the nebula, while resembling the pine needles of the tree. Meanwhile, the white specks, akin to twinkling lights in the night sky, represent infrared data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. 

The X-rays detected by Chandra are rendered as blue and white lights, adding a dazzling effect to the cosmic tree. These young stars are known for their volatility, exhibiting strong flares in X-rays and variations in different types of light, adding to the dynamic nature of this celestial image.

Instead of ornaments, the “Christmas Tree Cluster” conveys the diverse processes of the universe, from magnetic fields to the fluctuating thickness of gases obscuring stars.
