Disney Makes Rare Move Of Confirming Grisly ‘Lion King’ Theory

Who says Disney sugarcoats everything? The House of Mouse has confirmed a long-speculated fan theory that adds a grim—but biologically accurate—layer to The Lion King.

The revelation, emerging from the Disney Villains: Scar comic series and noted by Screen Rant, reaffirms the belief that the hyenas resorted to cannibalism amid desperation and scarcity, redefining the narrative’s undertones and bringing a chilling sense of reality to the animated savannah.

The theory, which has been part of fan discussions for years, suggests that the hyenas’ alliance with Scar and their subsequent actions were driven by extreme survival instincts. Banished from the Pride Lands and left to fend for themselves on grounds barren of prey, they turned to consuming each other, a detail that’s now canonically acknowledged by Disney. 

The discovery is depicted in a dramatic scene within the comics, in which Shenzi, the iconic hyena voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, is ominously served up as the next potential feast.

“You’ve eaten your fill at feasts just like these,” the Queen of the Bone Eaters is stated to have told Shenzi in the story. “Now it’s your turn to be the feast.”

Shaped by the unforgiving laws of nature, this species worked instinctively to survive against all odds.

This darker element of sacrificial lambs hyenas introduces a level of complexity to The Lion King that goes beyond its surface story of royal succession and personal redemption. While the animation giant is known for its enchanting and often idealistic portrayals of life, this less Disney-fied move enriches the backstories of the villainous sidekicks while recognizing the existence of more somber truths in the natural world.
