Mickey Mouse Horror Game Changes Name Over Neo-Nazi Accusations

Mickey Mouse has seen better days, for sure. A new horror co-op game initially titled Infestation 88, featuring a demented version of the now-public-domain icon, has undergone a name change amid concerns over unintentional references to neo-Nazi symbolism.

Now Infestation: Origins, the game positions players in a survival horror scenario, where they must confront a terrifying rodent outbreak. This spin on the Mickey Mouse universe was announced on January 1, the very day the iconic character Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, with the game leaning into the earliest designs of the beloved Disney mascot.

According to developer Nightmare Forge Games, the original name referred to the year in which the game is set, 1988. The number 88 was also chosen due to its symmetrical appearance, it added. However, the titling came under scrutiny for its unintended association with white supremacist codes.

Per the American Jewish Committee, the number 88 is often used in neo-Nazi circles as shorthand for “Heil Hitler,” due to “H” being the eighth letter of the alphabet.

Upon being alerted of this disturbing connection, Nightmare Forge Games promptly changed the name to Infestation: Origins and replaced the game’s key art, as well as expressed regret for any offense caused.

“Our game Infestation 88 is set in the 1980s, with the year 1988 chosen simply due to its symmetrical design in the game’s artwork/logo,” the creators wrote in a statement. “Unfortunately, we were unaware of any additional meanings the number ‘88’ has. However, after learning about this, we’re changing the game’s name to Infestation: Origins. We apologize for our ignorance on this and appreciate that this was brought to our attention so we could address it ASAP!”

Set for an early access release in 2024 on Steam, Infestation: Origins aims to involve the gaming community directly in its development. The creators plan to use a six-to-12-month initial period to gather player feedback and shape the game.
