OtterBox Grows Greener With Hardy Cactus Leather Tech Accessories

OtterBox finds a thriving ecosystem where others only see an arid landscape. The mobile accessory maker is now branching out into a new realm of sustainability with its latest series, unveiled at CES 2024, which sees products crafted from an unconventional but environmentally friendly material: cactus leather.

This crop of plant-based items has sprouted from a partnership between OtterBox and Adriano di Marti, a company specializing in the production of Desserto, a leather alternative derived from nopal cacti. 

The use of nopal cacti in the new Symmetry Series Cactus Leather speaks to the accessories’ resilience. These plants can flourish in barren conditions without the need for extensive irrigation or warm climates.

The Desserto farm not only supports a diverse ecosystem but also plays a role in carbon sequestration, absorbing more CO2 than it emits during cultivation. Moreover, the agricultural process is sustainable, as only mature leaves are harvested, allowing the cactus to regrow and be re-harvested within six to eight months.

The collection, a step towards eco-friendly and cruelty-free manufacturing in the tech gadget space, comprises phone cases, MagSafe wallets, and Apple Watch bands—each piece boasting durability and resistance to scuffs and stains, while also offering a premium look and feel akin to traditional leather. In the words of OtterBox CEO JC Richardson, “These cases look good, feel good and you can feel good about using it, too.”

Notably, the cactus leather phone covers are designed to provide remarkable protection, meeting a 3X MIL-STD drop protection rating.

Meanwhile, the MagSafe wallets and Apple Watch bands in the series are designed to complement the phone cases with matching earthy hues. The wallet sports a foldaway design for easy MagSafe charging, and the watch band is crafted for comfort and breathability.

The company is set to launch these products on its website and through selected retailers and carriers, though no release date has been announced as of yet.
