Oh, you thought being engaged in Pokémon GO was the most distracted you could be on your strolls? Cue the Apple Vision Pro and its league of followers. Early adopters of the mixed-reality headgear have been spotted using it in the wild, turning heads and confusing a lot of people, and perhaps even pigeons.

As shown in viral videos turned memes, owners of the headset have been doing everything in it from navigating city streets to working out and even riding electric skateboards, all while seemingly talking to themselves.

The gadget’s passthrough mode, integrating virtual elements in your physical surroundings, makes it less likely for users to bump into lamp posts—but just because you can take it out on a spin, doesn’t mean you should.

Vision Pro旋風がじわじわとUS国内で巻き起こりはじめた。Vision Proをまとって、街なかでスケボーする人、ジムで運動する人、テスラを運転する人(→これは違反行為)などなど。

One Tesla driver filmed himself being “pulled over” by police for driving down the highway while wearing the glasses (he’s since claimed it is a “skit”).

YouTuber Casey Neistat took one for the team and tested out the Vision Pro around New York City. He skateboarded, rode the subway, and generally meandered around the Big Apple with the goggles on. While impressed by its capabilities, he also ran into issues, from disappearing videos to ‘Tracking Failed’ alerts in less-than-ideal locations.

Look, we don’t know who needs to hear this, but safety should always come first. By all means, explore and enjoy the wonders of augmented and virtual reality—or “spatial computing,” as the tech giant terms it—but maybe keep it to environments where the biggest risk is bumping into your furniture, not an oncoming vehicle.

An old-fashioned reality check remains well-needed especially in this increasingly augmented world.
