AirPods Max DIY Kit Gives It A Feature Only Expected In The Next Model

Leaping ahead of Apple’s timeline, the AirPods Max have unofficially entered the USB-C era, thanks to Swiss hardware hacker Ken Pillonel, who has ingeniously modified his headphones to include the universally embraced charging standard. Now you can get crafty and fix up a version too.
This tweak is notable as it preempts the Cupertino tech giant’s rumored plans to bring USB-C to the next generation of AirPods Max. The timing couldn’t be more apt, given that the device has not seen an update in over three years and remains one of the last bastions of the Lightning connector in Apple’s lineup.
Pillonel, who has previously drawn the attention of tech enthusiasts for similar adjustments to Apple gadgets, has documented his latest project in a video. Taking the over-the-ear headphones to a pseudo-2.0 model is a custom replacement part involving an open-source USB-C conversion circuit and a tailor-made printed circuit board (PCB).

Remarkably, the enhancement requires no invasive changes to the headphone’s body, thanks to a removable metal lip around the original port that facilitates an easy swap. Without drilling or other permanent adjustments, it preserves the integrity of the gear.

Luckily, you won’t have to rack your brains trying to replicate this alternative. Pillonel has made “41rP0d$ MAX” DIY kits available on his website for 39.90 Swiss Francs (US$45.40), complete with a step-by-step installation guide. Take note that your AppleCare+ warranty could be forfeited if you go through with the hack, however.
