Keurig Serves Up Plant-Based Coffee Pods That Fully Break Down After Use

Keurig is making a cuppa changes to the way it brews single-serve coffee with innovative K-Rounds—100% compostable, plant-based coffee pods. Soon, K-Cups drinkers will be able to take their habitual sips without any environmental guilt.
Unlike their plastic-clad counterparts, these capsules use nature’s bounty to eliminate the need for plastic and aluminum altogether. Their protective, plant-based shell is made from cellulose, sorbitol, sodium chloride, and alginate, derived from readily available sources like seaweed and algae.

The design allows these pods to decompose just like regular coffee grounds, whether in a compost heap or a trashcan, making them a smart choice for eco-conscious coffee drinkers.

The introduction of K-Rounds brings a variety of coffee experiences to the table, from strong espressos with a perfect crema to aromatic hot coffees and even chilled cold brews.

These pods are designed for high-pressure brewing, a feature that extracts the full flavor and richness of the coffee. As such, each comes with a brew style code, which the Keurig Alta brewer reads to deliver the ideal cup every time.

While K-Rounds require the new Alta machine, the brand isn’t ignoring current Keurig owners. The Alta boasts a separate chamber compatible with existing K-Cup pods, ensuring a smooth and green transition for longtime fans.
At present, both the K-Rounds and the new coffee machine are seeking testers for a beta program, with an actual launch expected next year.
