‘MetaBirkins’ To Be Exhibited At Museum To Hermès’ Disgruntlement

MetaBirkins NFTs—digital tokens inspired by the famed Hermès Birkin bag— are set to be exhibited at Stockholm’s Spritmuseum, following a recent court decision. This comes after a months-long legal battle between luxury brand Hermès and artist Mason Rothschild (also known as Sonny Estival) regarding trademark infringement.
In a surprise reversal, a US district judge in New York ruled that the MetaBirkins NFTs could be displayed, provided there is clear disclosure about the ongoing legal dispute.

The MetaBirkins are a collection of digitally rendered, fur-clad versions of Hermès' iconic Birkin bags, transformed into non-fungible tokens. Hermès argued the NFTs diluted their brand, confused consumers, and infringed on their planned foray into the NFT space. The lawsuit resulted in a seemingly decisive jury decision, finding Rothschild’s NFTs intentionally misleading and imposing a permanent injunction against further trademark infringement.
However, Rothschild has maintained that his work is a form of artistic commentary on the fashion industry's fur-free practices and the concept of luxury good valuation in the digital age.
The Spritmuseum, known for its focus on Swedish libations and the Absolut Art Collection, will showcase Rothschild’s digital works—with disclaimers to prevent any potential consumer confusion—at its exhibition, titled Andy Warhol: A Portrait of Commerce, which will explore the relationship between art and consumerism.
