YouTube is rethinking its idea of “play” with the debut of Playables, where users can play a curated selection of casual games—yes, games—directly within its app or on the desktop website for free.
The rollout comes after a successful pilot last year, and will see availability for a wider audience on Android, iOS, and desktop browsers. At launch, there are over 75 titles at your disposal. You can ditch the downloads and dive into quick gaming fun as they’re all ready to play right away.
Playables focuses on lightweight, quick-play experiences, great for those in-between moments or when you just need a short break. They’re a “fun, interactive way to experience YouTube,” as Google puts it, and would certainly serve those who’d spend their time at work playing Solitaire well. The low-commitment roster includes Angry Birds Showdown, Cut the Rope, Words of Wonders, Tomb of the Mask, Trivia Crack, and Chess Classic.

As suggested earlier, there’s no need for extra software or hardware—just the latest YouTube app, a supported device, and an internet connection—to dabble into genres like action, racing, trivia, and even word puzzles. Better yet, your progress is automatically saved and synced across devices, allowing you to pick up right where you left off, regardless of whether you’re using your phone, tablet, or computer.
This move positions YouTube directly against streaming services like Netflix, which have begun offering in-app games, as well as panders to a growing audience accustomed to instant gratification and bite-sized entertainment.
Users in the US, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia can expect to see the feature on their YouTube apps soon, with wider availability planned for the coming months.
The company also expects to add new titles to the selection constantly. So, the next time you crave a quick win, there’ll be something to scratch that itch.
