For World Bee Day (May 20), supermarket giant Lidl gave cheers to one of nature’s most industrious workers. ‘Bee-rs’ are concocted to give a much-needed energy boost to wild bees and other pollinators that are facing increasing threats.
Bees are the backbone of our gardens, but these busy pollinators are facing a serious decline. Extending a helping wing, the bee-rilliant campaign sees these buzzy beverages packed with inverted sugar syrup, serving as a lifeline for fuzzy friends in need of a pick-me-up. This specially formulated recipe is perfect for reviving bees and pollinators struggling due to a decline in the flowers they rely on for food. With both urban and rural areas experiencing this deterioration, the timing of the initiative couldn’t be more critical.
According to a 2023 WWF x Bug Life report, 40% of bee species in the UK are experiencing “dramatic rates of decline.” Lidl’s Bee-rs campaign encourages individuals to step in and help when they spot a bee in need. The tiny 2cm (0.78-inch) tall Bee-rs were available through a free giveaway on Lidl’s website, encouraging individuals to toast to conservation efforts in their own backyards.
Lidl emphasizes that one of the best ways to support wild bees and pollinators is by planting bee-friendly flowers in gardens or plant pots at home. Nectar-rich blooms such as lavender, sunflowers, and wildflowers provide essential food and shelter for these insects.

Additionally, the Bee-r bottles can be refilled with a simple syrup made from equal parts white granulated sugar and warm water, creating a clear, dissolved solution.
Bee-yond Happy Hour, Lidl is also donating £10,000 (US$12,800) to The British Bee Charity. This contribution will aid bee conservation efforts and raise awareness about the importance of pollinator health. The funds will be used to educate children across UK schools, fostering an understanding of the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.
“So much of our flora, fauna and food depends on pollinators,” remarks Greg Bool, chairman of The British Bee Charity. The Bee-rs are “a great opportunity for nature lovers to give local biodiversity a little helping hand,” he adds.
