Netflix has big plans to shake things up in your living room. The streaming giant is testing a fresh look for its TV app, marking its most dramatic overhaul for televisions in 10 years. If all goes well, the update will make its way across several devices, including the Apple TV 4K, Chromecast, and smart TVs.
Forgoing the traditional sidebar menu and tiled design, the all-new Netflix homepage introduces dynamic boxes that expand as you hover over them with your remote control, making for a more responsive feel that reacts to a common user action.
A new streamlined menu at the top of the screen, replacing the old sidebar, guides viewers directly to options like search, home, shows, movies, and My Netflix—not unlike the UI of the Apple TV app.
Also retired are dedicated tabs for ‘Categories’ and ‘New & Popular’. In their stead, a ‘New & Popular’ content section would still be accessible within the My Netflix zone, alongside personalized recommendations based on your viewing history. Categories can now be explored through the Search function, offering a more targeted browsing experience.
Netflix’s sleek makeover seeks to simplify content discovery, following research that users have been performing “eye gymnastics” when searching for a title, scanning different parts of the home screen. The new layout aims to make navigation more intuitive and efficient, reducing the effort needed to find something to watch.
This significant interface overhaul is currently being trialed with a select group of users. Netflix will gather feedback, make adjustments if necessary, and then roll out the redesign more widely. Emphasizing engagement time as a key metric, the company has highlighted it as the “best proxy for customer satisfaction” to investors, underscoring the importance of this update.
