Ferrari’s First EV To Make Headway With An ‘Authentic’ Roar

Ferrari, the legendary Italian automaker synonymous with throaty engine growls and high-performance, is pulling out the stops to override the silence inherent in electric vehicles. Its upcoming first electric car, expected to debut in late 2025, will apparently feature an  “authentic” roar according to Emanuele Carando, head of product marketing at Ferrari.

In an interview with Drive, Carando emphasized that the driving thrills associated with a Ferrari extend beyond raw acceleration. For the Prancing Horse, it’s about power, force, weight, brakes, and—crucially—sound. 

For now, details on how exactly Ferrari will achieve this for the yet-to-be-named car are scarce. Carando remained tight-lipped when pressed by media, replying with a cryptic “You will see. You will hear.”

Recent patents, however, suggest that the Maranello-based company has developed an intricate system of auditory feedback devices that harness the actual sounds produced by the vehicle’s motors and aerodynamics, ensuring that the EV’s roar is unmistakably Ferrari.

The merits of the perceived bells and whistles track (ahem). For many drivers, the sound of a V-12 engine is a key part of the driving experience.  A well-crafted electric sound could enhance the emotional connection between driver and car, even in the absence of a traditional combustion engine.

While Ferrari accelerates toward an electrified future, it remains steadfast in its commitment to the combustion engine. Talking to CarExpert, Carando reemphasized the sentiments of product development head Gianmaria Fulgenzi: as long as regulations permit, V-12 engines will continue to power Ferrari’s most revered models.
