This powerful photo was taken moments after an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Vucci described the frantic moments following the shooting, explaining how he moved to the other side of the stage, thinking it would be the evacuation route. He shared that when Trump stood up, the former President began “pumping his fists.” That’s when the photographer noticed blood streaming down the side of his face. He knew right away that he had captured a significant moment. Video footage shows Trump shouting “fight, fight, fight” as Vucci snapped the moment.

Trump later posted on Truth Social, thanking the Secret Service and law enforcers as well as detailing the incident: “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin.” He described being shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear and the subsequent bleeding.
