The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is flexing its legal muscle against Prime Hydration, the beverage company co-founded by YouTube personalities Logan Paul and KSI. In a lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of Colorado, the USOPC accuses Prime of using trademarked Olympic terminology and symbols without authorization.
The dispute centers on a special-edition Prime drink featuring Kevin Durant, a three-time Olympic gold medalist basketball player. The USOPC claims that Prime’s marketing materials for this edition infringe upon its trademarks, including the use of phrases like “Olympic,” “Team USA,” and, “Going for Gold,” alongside imagery associated with the Olympic rings. The committee argues that this creates a false impression of an official sponsorship or endorsement by the USOPC, potentially misleading consumers.
After a cease-and-desist letter on July 10, Prime reportedly continued shipping the incriminated product and neglected to remove infringing social media posts. While some offending content has since disappeared, the drink itself seems to have vanished from the brand’s website.
This isn't Prime’s first brush with controversy. Launched in 2022 by Paul and fellow YouTuber KSI, the drink faced criticism for its high caffeine content, especially considering its appeal to younger audiences. With the 2024 Paris Games about to begin, it appears Prime might be facing a disqualification of its own.
