Pizza Hut In Hong Kong Adds Pineapple To Pies After Italy Refutes Olympic Win

Pizza Hut in Hong Kong and Macao is serving up a slice of playful revenge. The chain has offered up free pineapple toppings (what sacrilege!), a cheeky dig at Italy following its less-than-stellar reaction to Hong Kong’s fencing gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka-long narrowly defeated Italy’s Filippo Macchi in a nail-biting men’s foil event, winning by a razor-thin margin of 15-14. This victory was particularly significant as it made Cheung the first Hong Konger to secure two Olympic gold medals, following his triumph at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

But the event was overshadowed by Italy’s furious protests over the final point, awarded to Cheung after several video reviews. Italy’s team strongly contested the decision, labeling the refereeing as “unacceptable.”

The Italian Fencing Federation, led by President Paolo Azzi, announced plans to file a formal complaint with both the International Olympic Committee and the International Fencing Federation, arguing that Macchi was unjustly denied the gold.

Pizza Hut decided to add some flavor to the ongoing feud with a deal allowing customers to top their Italian-style pies with pineapple, an ingredient that has left people around the world, not just in Italy, on the fence (pardon the pun) for years.

These gold nuggets were given out through July 31. Let’s just say Hong Kong gets the medal for tasteful pettiness.
