At Comic-Con, 14 People Arrested For Human Trafficking, 10 Victims Recovered

At Comic-Con this year, real-life villains lurked in the shadows of thousands cosplaying as superheroes. A startling operation that unfolded during the international convention in San Diego, California, resulted in law enforcement officials arresting 14 individuals and rescuing 10 victims of sex trafficking. The event, dedicated to comic books and pop culture, annually draws crowds of over 130,000 enthusiasts. However, behind the colorful costumes and fandom celebrations, a darker reality emerged.

The California Department of Justice’s San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force orchestrated an undercover operation from July 25 to 27, targeting sex trafficking at the event. Working covertly, law enforcement personnel posed as sex buyers, aiming to identify and contact potential victims. They also posted undercover advertisements soliciting sexual activities to hone in on predators.

During the three-day sting, 14 buyers were apprehended, facing solicitation charges. Nine adult potential victims of sex trafficking were rescued, alongside a 16-year-old juvenile.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized the significance of these arrests, stating that sex traffickers often exploit large-scale events like Comic-Con to profit from their victims. “These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated,” Bonta continued.

“San Diego proudly hosts special events like Comic-Con—highly attended events like these allow us to showcase our growing and beautiful city,” shared Christopher Davis, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego. “However, when people use these events as an opportunity to prey upon minors, HSI and our law enforcement partners will find you and bring you before a court of law to face criminal charges.”

Davis warned there was “no place for alleged predators to operate in our city,” adding that officials are “committed to helping the victims of these crimes.”
