After witnessing what has been dubbed the largest IT outage in history, IT consultant David Senk created a website clowning it. Alas, the digital jester has failed to amuse its king.

On July 24, Senk launched ClownStrike (clownstrike.lol), a website that pokes fun at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike after a massive global tech failure that affected airports, hospitals, and businesses worldwide on July 19. CrowdStrike had attributed the widespread disruption to a problematic security update.

While Senk himself wasn’t directly impacted by the outage, he saw an opportunity to critique what he perceived as excessive “centralization” in the tech industry. ClownStrike features CrowdStrike’s logo transforming into a cartoon clown, complete with circus music in the background—a cheeky nod to the company’s role in the recent chaos.

However, CrowdStrike wasn’t tickled by the digital antics. Despite having numerous other matters to attend to, on July 31, the company sent a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice to Cloudflare, which was hosting ClownStrike, demanding for the CrowdStrike logo to be removed, or face the possibility of the entire site being taken down.

Wow... CrowdStrike is attempting to take down the mildly insulting parody website ClownStrike[dot]lol for trademark infringement 🤡

It would be awful if this caused a Streisand Effect and everybody went to this website and realized how much this company sucks and then stopped… pic.twitter.com/HrBgPgNQnO

Undeterred, Senk fought back, claiming fair use for parody. But when Cloudflare failed to respond to his counternotice, he was forced to relocate ClownStrike to a Hetzner server in Finland.

On his relocated site, Senk expresses his frustration with what he calls “corporate cyberbullies” and criticizes Cloudflare's counternotice system as “hilariously ineffective.”

It remains to be seen who will have the last laugh.
