Apple’s latest short film is sprinting ahead in the lane of inclusivity. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, known for his work on Sound of Metal and Blue Valentine, The Relay showcases eight remarkable athletes in a four-stage relay race uniting ability and disability in real-time.

The cast is a diverse group of elite athletes from around the globe, some of whom have their sights set on the 2028 Los Angeles games. Among them are a cyclist with an upper limb difference, a wheelchair racer, a low-vision swimmer, and a blade runner. Each participant’s journey exemplifies universal qualities of dedication, perseverance, and competitive spirit that define sports at the highest level.

Apple notes that for nearly four decades, it has integrated accessibility features into its products, firmly believing that such access is a fundamental right. The spot highlights how the Cupertino giant’s technology doesn’t discriminate, allowing all to excel alongside one another.

From the Workout app on Apple Watch to sleep metrics and daily exercise goals, Apple’s suite of tools caters to a wide range of athletic pursuits. Specialized, adaptive features like Point and Speak on iPhone for low-vision users and AssistiveTouch for one-handed Apple Watch operation further demonstrate a dedication to inclusive design.

The video, crafted by Apple’s in-house creative agency TBWA\Media Arts Lab,  goes to show that when barriers are removed, the human spirit can achieve incredible feats, regardless of physical limitations.
