Microsoft’s latest gaming gadget is no stick in the mud when it comes to accessibility. The tech giant has unveiled its Xbox Adaptive Joystick, a wired sidekick to existing Xbox controllers meant to level the playing field for gamers with limited mobility.

The result of years of thorough research, testing, and close collaboration with both players with disabilities and accessibility experts, the joystick consists of four customizable button inputs on the front, a standard Xbox thumbstick, and two additional buttons that mirror the bumper and trigger placement on traditional controllers.

Players can tailor the joystick to their individual needs using the Xbox Accessories app, which allows for button remapping and the creation of multiple controller profiles. This adaptability extends to how the joystick can be used—it’s designed for one-handed operation, can be mounted on tabletops, or even controlled by non-hand body parts like the chin.

The Xbox Adaptive Joystick can be plugged directly into a console or PC and paired with another controller for full functionality. Alternatively, gamers can use Xbox Controller Assist (formerly known as Xbox Copilot) to link the Adaptive Joystick with a standard Xbox controller, opening up possibilities for both solo and cooperative play.

In the same vein, the company has introduced a range of 3D-printable thumbstick toppers, developed with expert input. Available through Xbox Design Lab, these add-ons come in six different designs to address specific needs and preferences—from the plate-shaped topper for larger body parts to the dome-shaped option for varied grip strengths.

There’s also a stick-shaped topper that provides extra leverage, while the pull topper cradles appendages to reduce pressure. The sphere-shaped design supports alternative grasping methods, and a custom option allows for personalized shapes.

The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is slated for release in early 2025 in select Xbox markets worldwide. It will be sold exclusively through the Microsoft Store at a price point of US$29.99.
