Nokia Maker HMD Debuts Barbie Flip Phone That’s Big On Pink & Digital Detox

Hiya, Barbie! The early 2000s are calling, and they’ve got a pretty-in-pink surprise by way of Mattel and HMD Global, the maker of Nokia-branded phones.
Bringing us a blast from the past is the HMD Barbie Flip Phone, which made its debut in the UK on August 27, with plans to strut its stuff across the pond to the US later this fall. The nostalgia-packed handheld is purposefully designed to transport users back to a simpler time, when snake was the height of mobile gaming and selfies were taken with actual cameras.

The phone’s design is a homage to vintage Barbie, complete with a vibrant pink exterior and a flip mechanism that’s as satisfying to use as it is stylish. Those who love dolling up will appreciate the front cover that doubles as a mirror, perfect for quick touch-ups on the go.

Mirroring how Barbie constantly refreshes her wardrobe, the phone comes with two alternative covers—one inspired by the swirly patterns of the 1992 Totally Hair Barbie doll, and another sporting a vintage ‘shooting heart’ design—to dress up your tech according to your mood.

Owners can also bedazzle their devices with accompanying stick-on crystals and retro Barbie stickers featuring flowers, flamingos, and rainbows. Additionally, the phone comes with a pastel beaded strap adorned with charms that pay tribute to Barbie’s most iconic looks of miniature sunglasses, roller skates, and palm trees.
The maximalist exterior belies the demure and mindful queen within. The Barbie Flip Phone is a nod towards the growing fascination with digital detoxes, distilled down to a simpler mobile experience focused on basic functions like calling and texting. The bespoke user interface includes Barbie-themed wallpapers and app icons, along with digital balance tips to promote healthier tech habits.

The US model of the pocket-friendly Dreamhouse of features will be available for US$129 starting October 1. Preorders will open on the HMD website from September 23, and the phone will be compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon wireless networks.
