Zara is about to turn old threads into new opportunities in the United States, where it will expand its Pre-Owned platform to give more shoppers a chance to join the secondhand fashion revolution.
By the end of October, Americans will be able to buy, sell, or donate their pre-loved Zara clothes directly through the fashion retailer as part of an initiative already up and running in 16 European countries that aims to reduce waste and keep garments in circulation.
Inditex, Zara’s parent company, plans to roll out Pre-Owned across all key markets by 2025. The service will be available through the brand’s stores, website, and app, making it easy for customers to help stretch the lifespan of fast-fashion goods. Not only does this initiative address the growing consumer demand for sustainable options, but it also reduces the need for raw materials, helping to minimize the fashion industry’s environmental impact.
Through Zara’s Pre-Owned platform, customers can access repair services, sell their gently used clothing directly to others, or donate items, all with the goal of reducing textile waste.
Currently, the service is available in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK, and will soon be accessible in markets like the US and beyond as part of a push toward sustainability.
Further, Zara plans to introduce live shopping shows in the US and several other core markets, including Spain, Canada, and Germany. These live events, which have already proven popular in China, are expected to give the brand a leg up in the competitive retail space.
