Marvel and Disney have joined forces for a crossover that stretches the imagination in a truly fantastic way. The new one-shot comic, Marvel & Disney: What If…? Mickey & Friends Became the Fantastic Four, sees the mainstay Disney crew take on superhero personas in a nostalgic yet unexpected reimagining of the Fantastic Four.

Written by Steve Behling and Riccardo Secchi with artwork by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio, the story pays tribute to the original Fantastic Four #1 from 1961, crafted by Marvel legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In the House of Mouse’s twist, Mickey transforms into Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic), using stretching powers to save the day, while Minnie takes on the role of Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) with her ability to become invisible.

Goofy, ever the wild card, becomes Johnny Storm (Human Torch), literally lighting up with fiery abilities, and Donald Duck embodies Ben Grimm (The Thing), with his new rocky exterior and colossal strength.

The story follows the newly minted heroes on a fateful space voyage, where a cosmic storm bestows upon them their extraordinary abilities. Their first challenge as a team pits them against Mole Pete, a Disney-fied version of the classic Fantastic Four villain Mole Man, as they strive to save Duckburg from impending doom.

“As a huge [Fantastic Four] fan myself, I can tell you this issue will tickle your nostalgic funny bone, bringing the spirit of Marvel’s first family to a story I can only describe as Funtastic!” enthuses editor Mark Paniccia.

This adventure is the latest in a series of What If…? Stories transporting Disney’s magic into Marvel’s vast universe. Previous editions from this year have seen Donald Duck as Wolverine and Thor, and Minnie Mouse stepping into Captain Marvel’s shoes (shown below).

The forthcoming comic will hit shelves on January 8, 2025, and will be available in both print and digital formats.
