OpenAI is facing an internal tempest over a proposed new logo design that’s reportedly leaving some employees feeling less than inspired. As first reported by Fortune, the company showed off a different logomark during a staff meeting that those in attendance have described as “ominous.”
Featuring an austere black ‘O’ or minimalist circle, the suggested branding is a sharp contrast to the ChatGPT owner’s hexagonal flower shape, which symbolizes “precision, potential, and optimism.” The existing emblem, considered by the company as “our most recognizable brand element,” was also created in-house.
This logo kerfuffle is part of a larger rebranding effort that’s been in the works for about a year, coinciding with the arrival of new faces on OpenAI’s internal creative team. The fresh hires, hailing from creative agencies and graphic design fields, have been tasked with reshaping the company’s visual identity. The organization purportedly intends to roll out a broader company transformation in 2025.
However, this forward-looking strategy has hit a snag with its own workforce. Employees reportedly voiced their displeasure, with many feeling that the new design fails to embody the cutting-edge, innovative ethos that OpenAI is known for. Some are concerned that this effort misses the mark and may erode the brand’s connection with its mission.
