Jony Ive, whose imprint is evident across numerous Apple products, is reinventing something much smaller than an iPhone but just as essential: the button.
In a lovely tie-in with Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler, Ive’s cross-disciplinary creative firm LoveFrom has introduced a magnetic clasp called the ‘Duo Button’ as part of Moncler’s latest modular outerwear collection. This collaboration, four years in the making, features a range of jackets, including a parka, a field jacket, a down vest, and a hooded poncho, all tied together by this innovative new fastening system.

The Duo Button, the centerpiece of the LoveFrom, Moncler range, is a simple yet ingenious magnetic clasp that allows you to easily attach and detach different layers of a jacket with a satisfying click. Gone are the days of fumbling with zippers or complicated fasteners—this button makes switching between layers seamless and, quite literally, effortless, making it perfect for unpredictable weather.

Ive’s approach to the button—a feature most of us take for granted—is “gentle, humble,” he describes to Fast Company. The result is a connector that’s as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing, making the often tedious process of layering jackets something to look forward to.

The modular collection itself revolves around the central Moncore down jacket, with three outer shell options that can be easily attached via the duo button. Whether you’re facing a chilly breeze or full-on winter weather, the jackets allow wearers to adjust for the elements with minimal fuss. With sustainability in mind, the outerwear is made from high-quality recycled nylon.

Launching first in Moncler’s Paris Champs-Élysées boutique, the array represents a meeting of two design powerhouses. By rethinking something as simple as a button, Jony Ive once again proves that even the tiniest details can make a big impact.
