Christo & Jean-Claude To Be Honored With Optical Illusion ‘Cave’ In Paris By JR

Art often bridges the past and present, and this time, it cannot be truer. Renowned French artist JR is preparing to transform Paris’ Pont Neuf into a striking cave-like installation, paying homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s iconic 1985 project, The Pont Neuf Wrapped. Scheduled for September 2025, JR’s vision, titled Projet Pont Neuf, will temporarily reimagine the historic bridge, offering viewers a fresh perspective on its storied legacy.
In 1985, Christo and Jean-Claude draped the bridge in 1,800 square meters (nearly 450,000 square feet) of shimmering golden fabric, enchanting millions with the audacious scale and poetic beauty of their spectacle.

Four decades after that memorable transformation, JR’s ephemeral spin will turn the refined Renaissance architecture into rugged rock formations that span the Seine.
By sculpting temporary boulders reminiscent of the quarries that provided stones for Paris’ architecture, JR creates a raw, cavernous aesthetic. The dramatic contrast between nature’s untamed textures and the city’s refined elegance provokes reflection on the evolving relationship between urban spaces and the natural world.

JR’s approach, much like Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s philosophy, underlines the idea that art’s purpose is to disrupt the ordinary and challenge perceptions. By connecting the two banks of the Seine with this bold display, the street artist, in close collaboration with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, invites viewers to reconsider their engagement with public spaces.

Known for his trompe l’oeil (French for “deceives the eye”) works, JR has reimagined familiar spaces into surreal perspectives through massive optical illusions on the Louvre Pyramid and hyperrealistic art installations in cityscapes.
Scheduled for display from September 22 to October 5, 2025, Projet Pont Neuf will be privately funded, carrying forward the self-financed tradition of the couple.
For two weeks, locals and visitors alike will have the chance to experience the bridge's metamorphosis blending rugged natural textures and the monument’s architectural sophistication. Like its wrapped predecessor, Projet Pont Neuf celebrates the fleeting nature of public art while raising questions about urban development, natural history, and the evolution of public spaces.
